Announcements:
STEAM Day/ 100th Day of School: We had a super fun day on Friday! To celebrate STEAM day (science, technology, engineering, art, math) we had two design challenges! We had a hot wheels design challenge and a parachute design challenge. We had an art designer/teacher from the Art Center of Williamson County, come by and help us learn how to draw. We ended the day with our enrichment groups where students go to their selected groups (cooking, art, Lego robotics, Nintendo Labo and coding). Valentines Day Party and Supplies: Please click on the link to help with our 3rd grade Valentines Day party. The only way to make this party a success is with your help. We really need volunteers that can help out during the party with one of the activity stations. Please consider helping out. Thank you! 3rd Grade Valentines Day Party Valentines Boxes and Cards: A pink flyer went home in the Thursday folders about decorating a Valentines box at home and bringing cards for each classmate. The list of classmates is on the back of the flyer. Please bring these items to school on February 14th. Six Flags Reading Program: The form came home last week. Please read and follow the directions on the form. Students can turn in the form anytime before February 22nd. If you lost the Six Flags form please let me know and I can get you a new one. Thanks! Writing: We continued working on our fiction writings. We focused on developing characters and a setting and planning out the plot or main events of our writings. We also started to practice our revising/editing skills as we prepare for the Editing/Revising DCA test which will be in March. This week we focused on capitalization and punctuation errors in a sentence. Reading: We continued reading traditional literature and identifying story elements such as character, setting, plot, problem, solution and theme. This week we focused on identifying the main idea and details of a story. Math: We are wrapping up our unit on Geometry. This week we used multiplication to find the area of a rectangle/square. Next week we will review 3D shapes and vocabulary such as faces, vertices and edges. We will also identify what makes a 3D shape a polyhedron, a prism and a pyramid. Science: We are also wrapping up our science unit on soil and natural resources. We talked about composting and the importance of conserving our natural resources. This week we will review the unit using Kahoot. The next science unit is Weather and Climate. Social Studies: We are working on our economics unit. We started by identifying the difference between wants and needs, then we talked about scarcity and abundance.

Announcements: Economics Fair information came home this week. Our economics fair will be held on March 12th.
Bluebonnet voting party will take place on Tuesday, January 29th. Those students who read 5 bluebonnet books and passed 5 bluebonnet quizzes, will be invited to vote for their favorite book. Valentines Day party will be held on February 14th. I will be sending home information on valentines day boxes and cards in the Thursday folders. Writing- We are working on traditional literature such as folktales, fairy tales, myths and legends. Students will be creating their own fictional piece of writing. We were also working on identifying and using adverbs in our writing. Reading- We are reading traditional literature, such as folktales and fables and identifying story elements (characters, setting, problem, solution), the theme (lesson/moral) and the main events in the story. Math- We are in our Geometry unit. This week we focused on finding the area of a polygon using multiplication. Next week we will be learning about 3D shapes. Science- We continued our unit on soil and natural resources. We did a soil shake activity and observed the different layers of soil. We also identified renewable and non-renewable natural resources. Next week we will continue our unit focusing on composting, recycling and conservation. Social Studies- We started our unit on economics and discussed the differences between wants and needs. Writing: We started our unit on imaginative writing. We identified the elements of fairy tales, tall tales, legends and myths. Students will create outlines for each type of writing and then select one outline and use the writing process to create an imaginative story. Reading: We started our unit on traditional literature, focusing on fables, folktales, legends and myths. We reviewed elements of fiction such as character, setting, plot, theme. We also reviewed summarizing and sequencing using folktales. Math: We continued our unit on geometry. This week we focused on the attributes of quadrilaterals such as rectangles, trapezoids and parallelograms. Next week we will work on identifying and sorting equilateral, isosceles and scalene triangles. We will also work on area. Science: We continued our unit on soil and natural resources. We explored erosion and weathering with a hands-on "sugar cube" experiment. Next week we will complete a soil shake activity and start learning about our natural resources. Social Studies: We create a new social contract for the remainder of the school year. We also researched and created timelines for Martin Luther King Jr. Upcoming events:

Writing: This week we worked on our One Little Word Project. Students decided on one word they wanted to "live by" this year. Then the students wrote about why they chose this word. Finally we made a drawing of our word. These posters will be displayed around our room as a reminder of our one little word. Reading: We finished our unit on nonfiction text features and biographies. Students were in "book clubs" reading biographies and writing facts about their person. At the end of each reading block, students met with their book club and discussed the chapters they read that day. Math: We started our geometry unit in math this week. We reviewed vocabulary such as polygon, open vs. closed shapes, vertices, triangle, quadrilateral, square, rhombus, trapezoid, parallel, pentagon, hexagon. Next week we will continue with parallelograms, edges, faces, classifying triangles and area. Science: We started our soil, erosion, natural resources unit this week. We talked about the importance of soil and what makes up soil and did a fun hands-on activity with our soil samples. Social Studies: We reviewed our class social contract and the importance of a growth mindset. Next week we will create a new social contract for 2019. Announcements:
Our Third Grade Winter Party is Wednesday, December 19th, 1:30-2:30. Due to limited seating and space, our administration has asked that our party be only for students and parent volunteers, no siblings or other parents. Thank you! Writing: We finished writing our procedural (how-to) essays. We will be working on letter writing next week. Reading: We started our new unit on biographies. We talked about the differences between biographies and autobiographies. Students read biographies on pebble go, one of our library research resources. Math: We are almost finished this our unit on division. Our math DCA on Tuesday will cover both fractions and division. Science: We focused on volcanoes and landslides this week. We did a fun hands-on volcano experiment using vinegar and baking soda. Our unit DCA will be Tuesday and cover Earth's Forces: Earthquakes, Volcanoes and Landslides. Social Studies: We read several biographies about community and national heroes. Announcements:
Writing: We finished our expository writing and started our unit on procedural writing. Procedural writing tells how to do or make something, like a recipe. Students picked a topic they know a lot about and are working on writing instructions/directions for the procedure. Reading: We are finishing our unit on non-fiction texts, this week we worked on comparing and contrasting. Our next unit will be biographies and autobiographies. Math: We continued our unit on division, focusing on using equal groups and an array to show or model how to do a division problem. We also demonstrated how multiplication and division are in the same fact family. Next week we will continue with division and review fractions to prepare for our DCA test the following week. Science: Our unit is Earth's Forces - Earthquakes, Volcanoes and Landslides. This week our focus was on earthquakes and landforms. Next week, we'll learn more about volcanoes and landslides. Social Studies: We continued discussing heroes in our community. As we start our new reading unit on biographies, we will learn more about heroes. Announcements:
Are you planning on starting winter break early?? We do have assignments and tests all the way up to December 19th. Students will need to complete assignments or take tests (DCAs) before leaving on vacation, otherwise a "missing" score will be put into Home Access. Please, notify Mrs. McKenzie in advance. Thank you!! Apex Fun Run: The Apex Fun Run is an exciting way for our school to raise money! We will have an assembly next week to kick-off this fundraiser. Writing: This week we were focusing on contractions for spelling. Our mentor text this week was The Rough-Face Girl and we focused on adjectives. We continued working on our expository essays, with a focus on adding details to our writing. Reading: We continued our unit on non-fiction texts and text features. We focused on context clues and how these clues can help us determine the meaning of an unknown word. Math: We started our unit on division and talked about how we can connect multiplication and division. Our next math DCA will be on December 18th and will cover both fractions and division. Science: We finished our unit on Forces, Gravity and Magnetism and we took our unit DCA. We will start our new unit next week on Earth's Forces-Earthquakes, Volcanoes and Landslides. Social Studies: We continued talking about heroes in our community. We also started talking about our PBL project for the year. What's Been Happening in Class? Writing: We are continuing our unit on expository writing. We wrote an expository essay on the prompt, "What are you thankful for?". Reading: We are continuing with our unit on non-fiction texts. This week we focused on a few new reading strategies: identifying the problem and solution and cause and effect in non-fiction texts and articles. Math: We are working on fractions! We explored using a number line to represent fractions (think a ruler) and comparing fractions. Science: We are finishing our unit on forces, gravity, magnetism and simple machines. This week students worked in groups to create simple machines such as a incline plane, lever and pulley using VEX kits (similar to legos). Our unit test will be November 29th. Social Studies: We continued working on heroes in our community and discussed the character traits of heroes. Upcoming Events:
Third Grade Field Trip is Tuesday, November 13th! We are going to the Raymond Hartfield Performing Arts Center (next to McNeil High School) to see the play The Coloring Book! The weather is supposed to be cold so please have your student bring a jacket. Also, please send your student with lunch in a disposable bag. We are not able to bring regular lunch boxes. Thanks! Writing: We have been learning about the structure of an expository writing. Then we used this structure to write our own expository essays. Feel free to ask your student to bring their journal home to share their writing. Reading: We have been reading non-fiction texts and identifying non-fiction text features. We also used non-fiction texts to help practice identifying main ideas and supporting details. Math: We continued our unit on fractions. We learned a lot of new vocabulary: numerator, denominator, equal parts, area model, whole, half, thirds, fourths, sixths, eighths. We will continue next week with fractions on a number line and comparing fractions. Science: We are working on our Forces, Gravity and Magnetism unit. Much of this unit is doing hands-on experiments, so it is critical that your student is here during our science time (1:45-2:45) Thanks! The test for this unit will be after Thanksgiving break. Social Studies: We have been talking about heroes in our community. We studied the heroic deeds of Ruby Bridges and Daniel Boone. We also attended our veterans day assembly to honor our country's heroes. Announcements: Students should bring refillable water bottles to school everyday.

We identified non-fiction text features and worked on finding the main idea and supporting details in non-fiction books. Math: We finished our unit on multiplication and started our next unit on fractions. Science: We were finally able to test our solar ovens, which wrapped up our unit on energy. We started our new unit on force, motion and gravity. Social Studies: Students are working on identifying how communities celebrate their heroes. |
